Antiphonary 'Antiphoner' or Antiphonale Sacrosanctæ Romanæ Ecclesiæ pro diurnis horus 'Antiphonary of the Holy Roman Church for the daytime hours': book containing the antiphons sung or recited before, after, and between verses of the Psalms and all other chants for the Divine Office including the music. Breviarium Romanum Breviary: book containing the texts for the Divine Office (or Hours, now called the "Liturgy of the Hours"). Some, called "Noted Brevaries" have some chant notation. By the 14th century brevaries contain the complete texts of the Office. ASU Library: see BV260 .L53
Cantatoriale 'Cantatory': the book or part of a book with the chants sung by a soloist.
Ceremoniale 'Ceremonial': the book presenting the liturgical customs of a cathedral (diocesan) or collegiate church. The Ceremoniale Romanum first promulgated in 1516 presents the official customs of the Roman Rite.
Collectar: the book or part of a book containing the collects.
Customary: the book prescribing the duties of the officers of an institution including the ceremonial actions of the liturgy (see ceremoniale)
Diurnale 'Diurnal': book containing the day hours of the Office.
Graduale Romanum Roman Gradual or Graduale Sacrosanctæ Romanæ Ecclesiæ: book containing Gregorian chant notation and texts for the proper chants sung at Mass. Graduale simplex Simple Gradual: shortened version of the Graduale Romanum (modern).
Graduale Triplex: 1979 work from Solesmes with modern 4 line neums and two older non-staff sets of neums (neumis Laudunensibus (cod. 239) et Sangallensibus (codicum San Gallensis 359 et Einsidlensis 121) nunc auctum). ASU Library: M2148 .L4 1979
Horarium : a book containing the Hours; also the timetable for monastic days
Hymnarium 'hymnal': the book or part of an antiphonale or breviarium containing the hymns for the Office
Invitatorium 'Invitory': the part of an antiphonale or breviarium containing the texts/chants (antiphons) to be used at the opening sections of Matins including Psalm 94
Kyriale: the book or part of a Graduale or Missale containing the chants for the Ordinary of the Mass. ASU Library: M2148.4 .L4 1975
Lectionary: book of reading organized by the calendar of liturgical seasons and feasts; see Ordo Lectionum Missæ
Liber hymnarium Hymnary or hymnal: book of hymn texts usually with music for use in the Mass and Divine Hours. Modern origin.
Liber Horas 'Book of Hours': a book used for private devotion usually containing the Office of the BVM, the Office of the Dead, and the seven penitential Psalms. Used by the laity and many Medieval/Renaissance examples are highly illuminated.
Liber Usualis "Liber" 'Common book': book containing all the chants for the Mass (propers and ordinary) and much of the music and texts for the Divine Offices. Produced by the monks of the Benedictine Abbey of Solesmes (France) beginning in the late 19th century. It includes rules for the interpretation of Gregorian Chant (according to the Solesmes method) and the rubrics for chanting in the Mass and Hours.

Manuale 'Manual': book with the services (except Mass and Office, e.g., baptism, marriage) for use in a parish church (see Rituale)
Missale Romanum [Sacramentale Gregorian] Sacramentary: book containing the rubrics and TEXTS necessary for celebrating the liturgical rites (Mass and other sacraments). Normally does not contain scripture or chants, though modern edition contain minimal chant notation. The Missale Romanum was promulgated by Pope St. Pius V in 1570 by decree of the Council of Trent for universal usage (previously used in Rome with various regional sacramentaries used in other places). Ordinale 'Ordinal': the book presenting the appropriate ritual order and actions of the liturgy
Ordo Lectionum Missæ Lectionary: book containing the Scripture readings (pericopes) for the Mass and other sacraments. Modern books include the intervening chant texts (not notation), e.g., Responsorial Psalms, Gospel Acclamations.
Ordo Liturgicus 'Ordo': book listing the feasts to be celebrated in a specific region (diocese) as well as additional information pertinent to liturgical celebrations within that region
Pontificale: 'Pontifical': book with the rite presided over by a bishop (confirmation, ordination, consecration of a church) and episcopal blessings
Processionale 'Processional': book containing the chants and prayers used for liturgical processions. ASU Library: a Sarum use, M2149.6 1502b.
Primer: book of popular devotions among the laity in the Middle Ages containing the Little Office of the Virgin, Office of the Dead, Gradual Psalms, Penitential Psalms (6, 31, 50, 101, 129, 142), and Litany of the Saints
Psalter: book of the 150 Psalms or the parts of an Antiphonale or Brevarium containing the Psalms ad canticles. The Vulgate numbering of the Psalms, formerly used in the Roman Catholic Church differs slightly from that of the Hebrew Bible which is now the standard.
Rituale Romanum 'Rituale': replaced the manuale after the Council of Trent. Contains the parish rites of baptism, confirmation, marriage, etc. ASU Library: selections from the post Vatican II, BX2035 .A4 1976 v.1 & 2.
Roman Martyrology: book of the martyrs and saints of the Church, used as a liturgical book in the Divine Office.
Sacramentary: liturgical book for the celebration of the Mass until the 12th century when the Missale supplanted it. Returned to use in the 20th century as a common term for the Missal. Sanctorale 'Sanctoral': the portion of the Calendar or part of liturgical books with texts/chants for the feasts of the Saints; Proper of the Saints.
Sequentiary: the book or part of an Antiphonale or Missale with the sequences and tropes
Temporale 'Temporal': the portion of the Calendar or part of liturgical books with texts/chants for the celebrations of the seasons of the year; Proper of the Time
'Tonary': the book or part of a book which contains the information for performing the antiphonal repertory and Psalm tones
'Troper': the book of part of a book (Antiphonale, Cantatoriale, or Missale) containing tropes and sequences
