Introduction to Ethnomusicology
Student Papers

The papers found in this section are placed here for the benefit of the entire class to have reference to the work of every student. They are unedited by me nor have I spent extensive time formatting them in HTML. Rather I have simply converted them via Office 98 MSWord HTML conversion in order to expedite them for use by the class. Therefore, there may be format inconsistancies and other problems that were not reflected or found in the original manuscript. Those of you who used footnotes, most have been lost in conversion - sorry about that. To each of you, I apologize for any errors I contributed by placing the papers on the web, but I in turn hope that you will all benefit by reading your colleague's work.

Enjoy!

Several of you have asked for information about style manuals and writing guides. Here 'tis:

Turabian, Kate L. A Manual for Writers of Term Papers, Theses, and Dissertations, Chicago, University of Chicago Press [use the latest edition available; a good systhesis for both footnote and parenthetical reference and bibliographic style]

A Manual of Style, Chicago, University of Chicago Press [use the latest edition available; considerably more detailed than the above]

Ethnomusicology [No formal style guide, but note the use of parenthetical citations, content footnotes, examples and charts within the text, and bibliography; the standard for the field in the United States.]

Wingell, Richard J. Writing about Music, Englewood Cliffs, NJ: Prentice Hall, 1990.

Bolker, Joan. Writing Your Dissertation in 15 Minutes a Day; A Guide to Starting, Revising, and Finishing Your Doctoral Thesis, New York: Henry Holt (Owl Books), 1998.
