TEXT: David Hiley, Western Plainchant, A handbook, Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1993.

PHILOSOPHY: Approximately two thirds of the class time will be devoted to an historical study of Gregorian Chant including the Traditional Roman Liturgy (calendar, Divine Office, Mass), texts, modes, and genres. Various manuscript sources will be examined including the recently issued facsimiles of the post-Council of Trent liturgical books and the post Vatican I books from Solesmes as well as other sources published from the 16th through the 19th centuries. Papal legislation and other documents from ca. A. D. 95 to the present will also be examined for their influences on chant. The text for the course will be David Hiley's Western Plainchant.

Some time each week will be spent learning to perform Gregorian Chant based on the methods of Solesmes, Ward, and the Le Mans Scola Saint-Gregoire. Sight reading in four line notation, interpreting neumatic notation, and a study of various approaches to chant "rhythm" will be studied. Gregorian chironomy including the placement of episemas according to the tradition of Solesmes will be examined, and comparisons will be made between a variety of "interpretations" of chant performance, both written historical data and recorded versions of chant from ca. 1900 to the present.

GRADING: Grades will be based on a mid-term (25%), a final presentation and paper (40%), and a variety of short assignments (episima and arsis/thesis placement, conducting and singing chant, use of Liber Usualis, quizzes, etc.) (25%) and class participation (reading assignments, listening examples, discussion, etc. ) (10%)
