Welcome to Theatre, History & Culture

What can theatre tell us about a given culture in its time and place?  Just as various cultures have produced theatre over time, so has theatre tended to produce culture – the various ideas, norms and values that tell a people who they are.

Theatre, History and Culture is a one-semester course devoted to exploring some of the many ways world history has shaped various performance traditions – and vice-versa.  It takes as its central focus the relationship between theatre and performance on the one hand, and various modes of human communication on the other.  The course is organized according to four main parts:

Within each part, there are weekly readings and assignments – read your syllabus carefully for all due dates!
